Tunnel elements for the Second Coentunnel near completion

In the construction dock on the old Maas at Barendrecht, men are hard at work building the four tunnel elements. The tunnel elements, each 178 metres long, rest peacefully side by side in the construction dock.

Barriers on the A8 reduce noise for nearby residents

The construction of the Second Coentunnel and the correspondent widening of some sections of the A8 and A10 pose consequences for their surroundings. On a large part of the route, Rijkswaterstaat is building sound barriers to limit the noise nuisance caused by road traffic. The construction of the first barriers for the second Coentunnel is about to begin.

Dag van de Bouw (Open Day of Construction) a success!

During the Dag van de Bouw (Open Day of Construction) on Saturday 5 June last, the building site of entrance South was opened up for the public. From 10.00 hours, visitors were welcome at the Information Center, which formed the starting point of a visit both to the Westrandweg and the 2nd Coentunnel.

The installation of the partition wall is a fine example of engineering

The partition is placed between the existing Coentunnel and the trench to be dredged for the second Coentunnel. The consortium thereby made a start with one of the most challenging works in the project.

Information centre second Coentunnel/Westrandweg open

On Monday 1 March 2010, the Chief Engineer Director of the Directorate-General of Public Works and Water Management Noord Holland, Fred Delpeut, opened the information centre Second Coentunnel/Westrandweg. He did so by starting a 3D animation of the project.

Minister Eurlings starts construction Second Coentunnel

The Dutch Minister Eurlings of Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management gave the official sign to start construction of the second Coentunnel and the Westrandweg ring-road on Monday 7 September 2009 by putting sand along the A10 West motorway in Amsterdam.

Start of preparatory activities

The Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) starts with the preparatory activities required for the construction of the Second Coentunnel. The executive building contractor, Coentunnel Company, will start preparing the surroundings for construction and the rerouting cables, conduits and pipes. The following weeks, the trees and shrubs along the A10 at the north and south side of the current Coentunnel are removed and cut down.

Second Coentunnel contract signed

Tuesday April 22nd 2008, the Directorate-General for Public works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) and Coentunnel Company BV signed the contract for the 'Capacity Expansion of the Projected Coentunnel Route. It concerns a DBFM-contract (Design, Build, Finance and Maintain) with a duration of 30 years and a total value of approximately € 500 million.
