The project

Creating capacity

Every day, over one hundred thousand cars drive through the Coentunnel. That is more than this motorway section can cope with, as the three lane motorway filters into two lanes through the tunnel. This is why the Coenplein junction has been in the Dutch traffic top ten for many years. Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management) conducted an extensive survey into the options for resolving the issues causing this bottleneck while preventing worse traffic jams on the Amsterdam ring road and the ring access roads. The solution: Creating capacity. In order to regenerate the traffic flow, Rijkswaterstaat decided to expand the section and construct a second Coentunnel between the A8 and A10 motorways. Coentunnel Company proved the pre-eminent party to manage this extension of capacity as required.
